Peace Bridge

Opening of the Derry Peace Bridge

Well I know this is not directly related to conservation or this project but this weekend the Derry Peace Bridge finally opened for public use. Since my arrival to Derry in September 2010 I have been watching the construction of the bridge and have enjoyed seeing it grow and change throughout the process.

The bridge was officially opened on Saturday the 25th of June by EU Commissioner Johannes Hahn who said,

“One of the key objectives of the European Union is to bring people together to live in peace, with a common respect both for shared values and for diversity. I believe that the peace bridge will help further this goal for the people of Derry-Londonderry. It will encourage greater levels of cross-community integration and usher in a new period of peace and reconciliation for the city.”

Hopefully the bridge lives up to this challenge of bringing the community together, the atmosphere on Saturday certainly made that seem possible.

Sadly I have already seen a picture of a bride and groom on the bridge, otherwise that could have been a feature on a future blog.

  2. Man! How did I miss that topic?! 🙂
